The first settlement of the village of Alcantarilha was apparently during the pre-Roman era but the actual name of Alcantarilha appears to have its origin during the Arab occupation. The reigning monarch construction of defending walls of the village in 1571 with its then recorded 150 occupants. The village is located on the EN 125 road abut 3 kilometres to the north of Armacao de Pera, but its present fame is due to the new large residential golf resort named Amendoeiras which has two championship golf courses, the 18-hole Nick Faldo Golf Course and the 18-hole Christy OConnell Golf Course. Also, very close to Alcantarilha are the popular Aqualand Water Park and the Zoomarine Park.

The village church is notable for its side curious chapel which has been constructed using approximately 1500 skulls and thigh bones which have been arranged in lateral bands.
