The popular village of Alvor is located on the estuary of the River Alvor and has been a important place because of its historic history. The port of Alvor was founded in 436 by the Carthaginian general Anibal Barca naming it Portus Hannibalis. The small settlement grew with a Celtic castle by the river mouth. Later, the Roman colony of Ipses was to mint their own currency which was then absorbed during the Roman era. Taken by the Moors in 716, the settlement was referred to as Albur with the construction of castle. This bastion was conquered in 1189, by the forces of King Sancho I of Portugal, with help from Crusader forces who are reputed to have killed 2.500 men women and children. Two years later it was retaken by the Moors and finally re-conquered in 1250. Alvor served for 500 years as the coastal defence from attacks by pirates and privateers until it was destroyed in 1755 by the earthquake and resulting tsunami. King John II died here 1495 in the palace of Alvaro de Ataide after falling ill.
The village church with attractive Manueline arches and pillars was constructed in the early part of the 16th century. Regardless of the advent of tourism in the 1960s the general character of the village has been maintained with the charm of narrow streets leading down to the harbour on the lagoon of the river estuary. The very long sandy beach is within close walking distance, or, alternatively there are cafes to sit and overlook the lagoon. There are a large selection of restaurants with different cuisines, bars and shops and offices offering tourist services. Close by is the 18-hole Alto Golf Course and equally close is the Penina Hotel with its 18-hole Penina Championship Golf Course. Also, nearby at Montes de Alvor is a popular Lawn Bowling Club.
