The village of Praia da Luz is located on the west side of Lagos in the western segment of the Algarve. Records show that this beachside hamlet has existed for millenniums before the Roman occupation of the Algarve. There are the some remains of a Roman bathhouse and storage tanks for garum fish paste. In the 17th century a Fort was constructed to protect locals from marauding pirates. The village of Luz was granted its rights in 1673. There is an 18th century church overlooking its fine sandy beach. It is because of this attractive sheltered beach that foreign visitors in the early 1920s decided to settle here and added the words Praia da (beach of) to its simple name of Luz.
The small centre of the village has almost retained its character but streets now expand in ost directions that are lined with holiday apartments and residential villas. The village unfortunately acquired some unwanted international fame in 2007 when an attractive small child named Madeleine on holiday with her family disappeared under very curious circumstances. The beach is mainly sheltered and not subject to undercurrents. When the tide goes out it leaves shallow rock pools for children in which to paddle and play.
