The Vale do Lobo Resort was the first specifically large area with an attractive beachfront in the Algarve devoted to attracting holiday and residential clients. It was created by Sir Richard Costain in 1962 offering holiday homes to the UK market. In 1977 the resort is purchased by Sander van Gelder who expands the sport facilities and also supporting services such as a Health Spa, Tennis Centre, Grass Bowling Green, and restaurants, shops and security. In 2006 the resort was purchased by a Portuguese Group whom has continued to improve all its sporting and other services. It is considered by many as one of the best holiday locations in the Algarve.
In 1965 the first of three 9-hole golf courses designed by Sir Henry Cotton was initiated. In 1971 the courses played host to the Algarve Golf Open which is repeated in 1976.. In 1977 the golf courses are redesigned and divided into the 18-hole Royal Golf Course and the 18-hole Ocean Golf Course. In 2002 and 2003 the Vale do Lobo Royal Golf Course hosted the Portuguese Golf Open.
