The town of Sagres is the furthest west in the Algarve and sits on the south-west promontory of the Iberian Peninsular named Cape Saint Vincent. It is a famous location as it was often the home of the famous Prince Henry the Navigator who in the 15th century created the wave of world land discoveries. It was also historic as three important naval battles took place of its headland. In 1693 the French defeated the English in 1780 the English defeated the Spanish and repeated with another naval victory in 1797. The dramatic sheer cliffs of Cape Saint Vincent present an impressive sight with their towering height and at the base beaten by waves of the Atlantic Ocean. The small harbour of Sagres is protected from the western winds and rough seas so it has been a saving port for many a distressed vessel. The area enjoys a micro-climate and although mainly barren of vegetation is an a good location for cliff top walking holidays as there are several coves and beaches.
