The village of Mexilhoeira Grande is located in the Algarve on the north side of the EN 125 road after leaving Portimao and driving to the west. The village certainly dates back to Roman times, or before, as a mosaic floor from a large villa dating from the 1st century is to be found at the Quinta da Abicada. Also, not to far to the north-east of Mexilhoeira Grande is the Megalithic site of Alcalar which is thought to be from between the third millennium BCE and 1600 BCE which consists of several burial tombs. |
