Praia do Vau which is a beachside area is located between Praia da Rocha and Alvor in the western part of the Algarve. Originally in the 1960s tit was two pleasant smallish sandy coves with a gentle access and virtually no dwellings. Tourism has completely changed the surroundings with the construction of holiday apartments and residential villas. Happily, the character of the area has still maintained some of its original charm. To the immediate north is the commercial town of Portimao which is linked by a dual carriageway. The two beaches are named Praia do Vau and Praia do Alemao and the last is sheltered by a cliff from the north and north-west winds making it an ideal location. There are some restaurants in the immediate neighborhood for snacks and meals.
Just to the north of these beaches is the 18-hole Alto Golf Course.
