The town of Vila Real de Santo Antonio is located on the eastern border of the Algarve facing Spain. The town lies on west side of the River Guadiana Estuary into the Atlantic Ocean and has a past history linked to the fishing industry. After the earthquake of 1755 which virtually destroyed the town King Jose I ordered the Marques de Pombal to rebuild the destroyed hamlet as a well planed town and gave it the name of Vila Real de Santo Antonio. The main square which is undergoing restoration is a good place to watch the world go by. Roads running off this square have a choice of shops, restaurants and bars. The old market building is now often used for local exhibitions and events. There exists the small Museum de Manuel Cabanas who as a local artist has on show his paintings and wood engravings. The river front is used for many fairs are held including a monthly antiques market with buyers flocking over from Ayamonte.
With the decline of the previous fishing trade a boat marina was built in 1998 which acts as good stopping point for yachts on their way to Gibraltar. There is a ferry service across the river to the Spanish town of Ayamonte leaving from the water front and also tourist boat tours up the river. In 1990 a modern bridge was constructed further upriver which links together the motorways in both Spain and Portugal. To the north of Vila Real de Santo Antonio are the 27-hole Castro Marim Golf Course and the 18-hole Quinta do Vale Golf Course.
