The present area of Monte Gordo was originally a fishing hamlet serving the nearby town of Vila real de Santo Antonio in the Algarve. Thanks to the boom of tourism since the 1960s there exists now almost a town with wide streets and high-rise hotels and apartment blocks running off from the long sandy beach. As a resort location it has developed with a Casino, restaurants, bars and shops. Families with young children find Monte Gordo particularly attractive as the beach is wide and flat and there is little risk of currents. An added bonus is that sea temperature at this end of the Algarve tends to be slightly higher for a swim or a paddle. The streets are wide and being level it is very suited to visitors in wheelchairs or for pushchairs.
There are three golf course to the north of the town and within easy driving distance. The 18-hole Monte Rei Golf Course, the 27-hole Castro Marim Golf Course and the 18-hole Quinta do Vale Golf Course. The beach also lends itself to kite surfing and wind surfing, whilst a boat excursion up the River Guadiana is popular. Due to the A22 motorway access from Faro Airport is made easy. The same motorway will take visitors over the River Guadiana into Spain and onto the fascinating City of Seville.
