Praia da Rocha is the name of the popular holiday beach located just to the south of Portimao in the western Algarve. As a holiday location it became extremely popular with the Portuguese since the late 19th century. The long beach area was protected from northern winds by low cliffs and the sandy beach tended to be in a serious of coves. Also, the views from the cliff tops were across the entrance to the River Arade Estuary with the constant movement of fishing boats leaving and returning with their catch. These cliff tops have now disappeared under concrete to supply tourist shops, bars and restaurants, hotels and apartments, all to cater for the swilling crowds that flock to the location by day and night. Happily for these visitors the beach was considerably broadened in the 1980s by dredging the sand from the mouth of the river. Today, the expense of the beach is such that there is ample room for all and more.
At the eastern end of the cliff top is the Fort of Santa Catarina de Ribamar which was constructed in the 16th century to protect the entrance to the River Arade that once carried sailing vessels up to inland City of Silves. The major commercial town of Portimao is only 2 kilometres inland and can be visited by public transport.
