The town of Moncarapacho in located inland to the east of Faro in the Algarve and was granted its town status 1985. It is essentially an agricultural area which has grown from a village due to the economic development of the Algarve in the 20th century. There is a local museum exhibiting artefacts from all its history and outside in an enclosed courtyard there is a collection of Roman pillars, carved marble finials and pre-Roman stone drinking troughs which have been discovered in the area during agricultural work. An impressive market festival is held in August which is well attended by locals from the surrounding villages to enjoy live music, food and wine. The oldest building in this small town is the Chapel of Santo Cristo next door to the Museum that dates from 1704. The most convenient driving route is to take the A 22 eastwards from Faro, turn southwards on the IP1 to Olhao, and then south-east on the EN 395. |
