The administrative town of Sao Bras de Alportel lays directly inland to the north of Faro in the middle of the Algarve and due to being location away from the coast it has tended to be missed by the advent of tourism. Being situated on the old main access from Lisbon to the Algarve it was a stopping point in the Roman and Moor periods. In the 17th century it was a retreat for the wealthy and the Bishop of Faro during the hotter months.
