Santa Barbara de Nexe is located inland and slightly to the north-west of the City of Faro in the Algarve. This in human remains dates back to the Middle Paleolithic (around 30,000 years ago), and was later inhabited by the pre-Roman peoples of the Iberian Peninsula by the Cynetes then the Phoenicians, Romans, Visigoths and Arabs. The oldest record is of a Roman, Sextus Numisius Eros, who in the 2nd century AD head his name chiseled on a funerary stone. The Algarve was eventually incorporated into the Kingdom of Portugal in 1272, by the King Alfonso III. In the 16th century it was granted its rights as a Parish but in the 14th century a parochial church was constructed. Since the influx of foreign tourism the area has become a home for many English and Dutch residents. |
