Originally a fishing hamlet and now a village, Ferragudo is located on the River Arade directly opposite the town of Portimao in the western part of the Algarve. Old gossip claims that this village was originally inhabited by pirates and vagabonds. The church crowns the village with downward sloping narrow streets lined with homes taking the visitor to the main square. Although some now are holiday homes of foreign residents Praca Rainha Dona Leonor, many of these cottages are still traditional homes for the fisherman. The main square has a lot of activity in high season as outside tables cater by supplying delicious pastries, a breakfast coffee, lunch or dinner. Around the corner the road leads to the quayside with more restaurants with an attractive view across the river whilst eating freshly caught fish. It is worth walking around the town as more restaurants and bars can be discovered up side streets.
The nearest beach to Ferragudo and within easy walking distance is Praia da Angrinha. Overlooking this beach is the interesting Fort named Sao Joao de Arade. Originally a 15th century lookout tower but later enlarged in the 17th century with fortifications to protect the mouth of the river from attacks by pirates and corsairs. The beach on the other side of this Fort is Praia Grande and very well frequented with supporting restaurants. Further afield there are the beaches of Praia do Pintadinho and Praia dos Caneiros. The last mentioned beach has a well appointed restaurant popular for its fresh quality fish and shellfish. Between these two is the Ponta do Altar on which is located a Lighthouse with splendid views across the mouth of the estuary to Praia da Rocha. On Sundays during the month a flea market is held attracting many visitors.
