The small village of Guia is about 4 kilometres distant to the west from Albufeira and lies on the EN 125 road in the Algarve. Guia is today famous with residents and visitors for its restaurants that serve the speciality dish of chicken piri-piri which is a small grilled basted chicken served with salad and chip potatoes. The two secrets of the extremely well tasting chicken is in the spicy basting sauce which consistancy is secretly guarded from kitchen to kitchen, and that it has to be served rapidly from the grill so that it retains much of its heat. The spice of piri-piri was discovered in the 16th century and Portugal became a major trading country. Chicken piri-piri as a dish is believed to have originated either from Angola or Mozambique, but probably Goa in India. It is among the most favourite of national dishes and thus helping to make Portugal the largest consumer of chicken in Europe. It is happily said by some that this dish is Portugal answer to McDonalds!
To the south of the village is the Adega da Cantor, or the Vineyard of the Singer, named after Sir Cliff Richard who has developed his own vineyard produced award-winning wines. His winery can be visited at the back of the Guia Shopping Mall which lies to the east of the town on the EN 125. The very popular destination Zoomarine is to be found to the west of Guia also on the En1254.
