The small village of Santa Luzia lays to the west of Tavira in the eastern segment of the Algarve. Its history was connected to the local fishing industry until tourism spread eastwards from Faro that naturally involved the beachside villages. However, Santa Luzia is separated from the sea by a sand bar and ideally the best beach is the Praia de Barril which can be reached by a small ferry. This beach is known for being the anchor graveyard from the now defunct tuna fishing industry. |
